Says Tom Godfrey: Joan Godfrey my late eldest sister, left school in 1934 and went on to the then University College Nottingham to study science and mathematics. She took her degree in 1937 which then was a London University External degree. She then sat the Civil Service Graduate Entry Examination and came top in Lower Mathematics. The Daily Mail printed a short article under the headline 'Women beat men at maths' and mentioned Joan's name. The Long Eaton Advertiser got to know about it and produced a much longer article and commissioned this special photograph of her to include in the article. My parents kept the article but sadly it was lost when they died.
