Gwen Ellis (LEGS U6 1971) later SANDHU passed away peacefully on 20th November 2014, aged 61 years after a short illness.
Her niece, Helen Bryan, said Gwen, who died at the age of 61 after a short illness in November last year, would have had a "giggle" at seeing everyone decked out in her favourite footwear. Helen, 31, said: "She was unique in that she wore Wellington boots all the time.
Gwen attended Parkfields Cedars Girls' Grammar School in Derby before the family moved to Long Eaton. She then moved back to Derby in 1970 when she began training to be a nurse. Four years later, she undertook an incredible journey overland to Kathmandu but injured her back in India and was unable to finish the trip. From 1977 to 1978 she took a private secretaries' course at Derby College and in 1978 began working at British Rail as secretary to the railway doctor.
She married her husband, Daljit, in 1979. The couple were no longer together when Gwen died. Outside work, Gwen was a committed environmentalist who was rarely seen without her bike.
