LEGS 1967 U6th
Died Oct 2009,
Alfred (John) PLUMB. Suddenly passed away on October 17th 2009, aged 59 years.

The following tribute was written by Kevin Palmer and was published in the Derby Telegraph:

Tributes have been paid to Alf Plumb, a well-established planner in Derby who died suddenly.

Mr Plumb was a chartered town planner with more than 40 years experience, latterly as director of DPDS Consulting Group Central Regional office in Derby on Mansfield Road.

Mr Plumb studied town planning at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham and was a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, the Institute of Management and a Fellow of the Faculty of Building. He was also chairman of the Home Builders’ Federation Midlands Planning Committee.

He worked as a town planner with Derby City Council and its predecessor authority for more than 20 years. He then moved into the private sector and worked for 10 years with Bovis Homes as director of town planning.

In 1996 he set up the central region offices of DPDS Consulting Group and continued to act for an extensive range of both public and private sector clients on varied and challenging town planning matters right up until his sudden death.

Chairman Les Durrant said: “Alf has been a personal friend and a tremendous, professional colleague. He has built up a very dedicated professional team in our Derby office who, under his leadership, has achieved outstanding results for our clients. He will be sadly missed.”

Derby city councilor Robin Wood, who chairs the planning committee, had known Mr Plumb both as an official and as a representative of developers at meetings.

“He spoke with great authority as an ex-officer who knew all the workings of the department and would always give a perfectly-argued case.

“He was thoroughly professional and Derby is a better place for some of the development work that he did.

“He was always great to deal with and had a good sense of humour.”

Away from his professional planning work, Mr Plumb was also involved in community and charity work, notably volunteering as chairman of Derby Community Transport for three years.

Chief executive Richard Jones said: “Alf was a wonderful chairman to work with. He passionately believed in the service we provided. He was an efficient chairman who had the charity’s best interests at heart. He also had a caring attitude towards both the service users and the staff

“Prior to that he was a stalwart supporter of and worked hard to ensure the progress of the Padley Group, especially in the development of the recycling unit which generated vital funds.

“This helped many disadvantaged people, both young and old who had difficulties because they had come out of prison or had learning difficulties, to re-establish themselves within the community.

“He was also instrumental and providing architectural and design plans for a new children’s orphanage in Tanzania for the Derby charity Kids Aid Tanzania which he also supported financially.

“He was a giver to others. His death is a great blow to the community.”

Mr Plumb (59), who lived at Mickleover, was also a member of the Rotary Club of Etwall and Hilton, and a lifelong Derby County supporter.

He leaves a widow, two sons and a daughter, and grandchildren.
