Sitting on the Playground Wall
John Simpson says: Don't know when - 40's at a guess? This is a temporary air raid shelter in the background? Photo would be during WW2 or a few years after. Underground air raid shelters were also built away from the school building near the canal side.

Names from the right :

Credit for names to Sheila Tyler.

Keith Tyler: Thought to be c.1946/7. I think the shot shows the high wall by the Groundsman's 'premises' off the rear playground. The pupils would be sitting on the low wall which faced them towards the school field.

Alan Gilbert ( Form 5 1947-48 ) recalls a shelter in that position with the Golden Brook just behind it and under the visible trees. The photo would be taken from the corner of the school building outside the Woodwork Room. The Woodwork teachers at that time were “Jock” Anderson and Mr Ash.
